Gold continues to rally in February
 |
Market environment - Overall, the global financial markets were sedate in February. Economic recovery in Europe continued and US Federal Reserve chief Janet Yallen chose to keep going with the specified taper programme.
- Emerging markets fell out of favour in February.
- The global fund flow shifted slightly as investors move out of US equity funds to bond funds, European equity and Japanese equity funds.
- The start of 2014 has been good for gold, with buying coming in. The upshot of this is that the price of gold has risen by 10.5% since the start of the year.
- Central bank policy, particularly in the US, Japan and Europe continues to dictate interest rates will stay low.
Fund performance - On the back of a strong gold price the BlackRock Pension Gold Fund rose 9.82% over the month. The BlackRock Mining Fund, Energy Fund and New Energy Funds also had a strong month rising 6.42%, 5.68% and 3.39% respectively (all based on pension fund performance).
- The Dynamic Multi Asset and High Yield Equity Funds rose 2.21% and 1.88% respectively.
- Our property funds continued their strong performance with the Irish Property Fund Series 2, UK Property Series 2 and European Commercial Property Funds rising by 1.86%, 0.6% and 0.44% respectively (all based on pension fund performance). The long-term track record of the UK Property Fund is impressive as you can see from the table below:
